game design

strescape

Strescape is a short game about a character that has tourette syndrome. They have to escape from a hospital without getting caught.

The main challenge in this project was figuring out how the main mechanic could work with different systems in the game. I tried to iterate on the main tic mechanic several times to come up with something fun and interesting.

The tic mechanic is based on sound and the radius of the sound. If the sound affects an enemy they come to investigate. There are several elements that affect your stress level, for example running speed and proximity to enemies. As you’re stress increases so does the radius of the sound when you have a tic.

the level

I used Miro to start the iterative process. To go from an idea to testing mechanics with quick prototypes.

After the main mechanic was there. The level design is something I really enjoyed. Coming up with an actual game and the systems that made the game work.

The story played a big part in the design of the level. Several hospital rooms with pills that could be collected to help you progress.

Stealth was a very important element in the game and there had to be a possibility to use stealth in the game and that influenced the design process a lot.
